Kasubi Tombs
A UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kampala, and one of our most requested cultural visits.
Muzibu Azaala Mpanga — the great thatched dome at the centre of the tombs.
Built in the 13th century in Kampala, Kasubi Tombs is the burial site of four Kabakas (Kings) of Buganda — one of the largest traditional kingdoms in East Africa: Muteesa I (1835–1884), Mwanga II (1867–1903), Daudi Chwa II (1896–1939) and Sir Edward Muteesa II (1924–1969). It is one of 31 royal tombs of the Buganda Kingdom, but its story centres mainly on Muteesa I.
Visitors first pass through Bujja Bukula, a circular reed-and-thatch gateway house where royal guards from the Butiko and Mbogo clans have stood watch for generations, their roles inherited along family lines to this day. Nearby, Ndoga Obukaba houses the royal drums — once used to announce births, deaths and events across the kingdom — including the great Mujaguzo, the largest of them all.
At the centre of the courtyard stands Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, said to be the largest grass-thatched structure in the world, its dome inspired by an upturned basket. Behind its bark-cloth divide lies the kibira, where the four kings rest — accessible only to their widows, the Katikkiro and spiritual leaders.
Look up inside the dome and count the 52 woven bizizi rings in the roof — one for every clan of the Buganda Kingdom, each once responsible for a duty to the royal household. Tradition holds that the four rings at the very centre represent the four kings buried below.
